Chick’s Treasure Map Location in RDR2: Hollow Tree Route

RDR2 Chick's treasure map and the hollow tree landmark

The Chick’s treasure map location in RDR2 is a hollow tree just north of Heartland Overflow. You obtain the map from Chick Matthews during Strauss’s Chapter 2 debt mission, then follow the tree landmark shown on the sketch to recover the hidden money.

Flatneck Station is the easiest starting point for the search. Ride east and northeast across the Heartlands toward Heartland Overflow, using the railroad and the water as landmarks. The final interaction is with the hollow in the tree, not with a marked chest or a buried treasure mound.

Chick’s Treasure Map Location in Money Lending and Other Sins I

Chick Matthews’s treasure is tied to Money Lending and Other Sins I, the early Chapter 2 debt-collection mission given to Arthur by Leopold Strauss at camp. Chick is one of Strauss’s debtors, and the mission directs Arthur into the Heartlands to collect what he owes.

When Arthur approaches Chick, Chick attempts to escape on horseback. The objective is to chase him down and stop him. After Arthur confronts him about the debt, Chick offers a treasure map instead of handing over cash. That map leads directly to the money he has hidden.

  • Start the debt mission from Strauss at camp.
  • Follow the mission marker to Chick and pursue him when he flees.
  • Take the map from Chick after the debt conversation.

How Chick Matthews’s Treasure Map Is Obtained

Chick Matthews’s treasure map is received during the debt encounter, so you do not need to discover a separate map location first. Stay close during the chase, stop Chick, and complete the confrontation. The map is then added to Arthur’s inventory and can be viewed with the other documents in the Satchel.

  1. Ride to Chick’s marked location in the Heartlands.
  2. Chase him as soon as he breaks away.
  3. Use the lasso or another method to bring him to a stop.
  4. Confront him and demand payment.
  5. Accept the map when he reveals where the money is hidden.

The map is the debt payment clue, not the beginning of a longer chain. Once you search the indicated tree, the Chick debt objective is resolved.

Read Chick’s Treasure Map: The Hollow Tree Near Heartland Overflow

Chick’s treasure map is a simple landmark drawing. Its important feature is the large, distinctive tree with a dark hollow in its trunk. Do not search for a traditional treasure chest or try to match every line of the sketch to the terrain. The tree itself is the clue.

The landmark is in the open ground just north of Heartland Overflow, close to the railroad. The surrounding area has low grass, scattered trees, and a clear view of the water. The target tree stands out because its trunk is broad and visibly hollowed, unlike the smaller healthy trees around it.

  • Heartland Overflow: Use the pond to confirm that you are in the correct area.
  • Railroad: Use the nearby tracks as a second route landmark.
  • Hollow tree: Search the opening in the trunk for the debt money.

If the map is open while you search, interpret the drawn tree as a recognizable object rather than a precise compass instruction. Once you are near the overflow, leave the main road and inspect the isolated trees on the northern side of the water.

Route from Flatneck Station to Chick Matthews’s Treasure: Collect the Debt Money

Follow this route from Flatneck Station:

  1. Open the map at Flatneck Station and locate Heartland Overflow, the body of water east and northeast of the station. Set a waypoint on the overflow rather than on Emerald Ranch.
  2. Leave Flatneck Station and ride east across the open Heartlands. Angle northeast as you approach the railway and keep the tracks nearby as a guide.
  3. Continue toward the water until Heartland Overflow is visible. If you reach a large settlement, you have continued too far toward Emerald Ranch; turn back toward the pond.
  4. Ride around to the northern side of the overflow. Stay near the shoreline and the railroad instead of searching the distant hills or the middle of the grassland.
  5. Look for the large, solitary tree with a split, hollowed trunk. It is close to the water and is much more prominent than the surrounding trees.
  6. Dismount and walk around the trunk until the Search prompt appears at the hollow. Activate it to retrieve the hidden money.

Arthur collects Chick Matthews’s debt from the tree, which is $35. If the interaction prompt does not appear, move closer to the trunk and check the opposite side of the hollow; the correct search point is on the tree itself. After the search animation, the money is added automatically and the debt-collection objective is complete.
