The Einstein puzzle is a five-house deduction problem: each house has one color, nationality, drink, pet, and cigarette brand. The Einstein riddle asks you to place every attribute without guessing, then identify who owns the fish.
This version of Einstein’s riddle uses the standard 15-clue set below. The Einstein logic puzzle has one unique solution when each category is used exactly once.
Einstein Puzzle: Complete Clue Set and Rules
Number the houses from left to right, 1 through 5. Each house has one item from each category. “Next to” means immediately beside it; “immediately left” means the house directly before it.
- The Brit lives in the red house.
- The Swede keeps dogs.
- The Dane drinks tea.
- The green house is immediately left of the white house.
- The owner of the green house drinks coffee.
- The person who smokes Pall Mall keeps birds.
- The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
- The person in the center house drinks milk.
- The Norwegian lives in the first house.
- The person who smokes Blends lives next to the person who keeps cats.
- The person who keeps horses lives next to the person who smokes Dunhill.
- The person who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
- The German smokes Prince.
- The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
- The person who smokes Blends lives next to the person who drinks water.
The final question is: Who owns the fish? Record a positive match with a check mark and every ruled-out match with an X. Because each value appears once, placing one attribute also excludes it from the other four houses.
Set Up the Five-Category Einstein Logic Puzzle Grid
Use five rows for the houses and five attribute groups for the grid. The house number is the position; the five categories are the attributes assigned to that position.
- Colors: red, green, white, yellow, blue
- Nationalities: Brit, Swede, Dane, Norwegian, German
- Drinks: tea, coffee, milk, beer, water
- Pets: dogs, birds, cats, horses, fish
- Cigarette brands: Pall Mall, Dunhill, Blue Master, Prince, Blends
Label the five rows H1, H2, H3, H4, and H5. For example, the first direct placement is H1 = Norwegian. Clue 14 then gives H2 = blue, because the Norwegian is next to the blue house. Mark “Norwegian” and “blue” out of every other incompatible row.
Make the Key Deductions in Order
- Fix the first positions: Clues 9 and 14 place the Norwegian in H1 and blue in H2. Clue 8 places milk in H3.
- Use the ordering clue: Green must be immediately left of white. H2 cannot be green because it is blue, and H3 cannot be green because it has milk while green requires coffee. If green were H1, white would be H2, another conflict. Therefore, H4 = green and coffee, and H5 = white.
- Complete the colors: H1 is Norwegian, so it cannot be the red house because clue 1 makes the red owner British. H1 is therefore yellow, while H3 = red and Brit. Clue 7 gives H1 = Dunhill.
- Apply adjacency: Horses are next to Dunhill, so the horse is in H2. H1 cannot drink tea because it is Norwegian, cannot drink milk because H3 has milk, and cannot drink coffee because H4 has coffee. It also cannot drink beer: beer belongs to Blue Master, while H1 smokes Dunhill. Thus, H1 = water.
- Place Blends: Blends must be next to water, so H2 smokes Blends. The remaining brands for H3, H4, and H5 are Pall Mall, Blue Master, and Prince. H3 is British, so it cannot be German with Prince. H4 has coffee, so it cannot be Blue Master, which requires beer. Therefore, H3 = Pall Mall and birds, H4 = Prince and German, and H5 = Blue Master and beer.
- Finish nationalities and drinks: The only unassigned drink for H2 is tea, so H2 = tea and Dane. The remaining nationality puts H5 = Swede, which gives H5 dogs.
- Resolve the last pets: H2 has horses, H3 has birds, and H5 has dogs. Blends in H2 must be next to cats, so cats must be in H1 or H3. H3 already has birds; therefore, H1 = cats and the remaining pet, H4 = fish.
Check Einstein’s Riddle with the Completed Solution
Read the finished grid from left to right:
- H1: yellow, Norwegian, water, cats, Dunhill
- H2: blue, Dane, tea, horses, Blends
- H3: red, Brit, milk, birds, Pall Mall
- H4: green, German, coffee, fish, Prince
- H5: white, Swede, beer, dogs, Blue Master
The ordering clue is satisfied because green is immediately left of white. Every next-door clue also works: the Norwegian is next to blue, Dunhill is next to horses, and Blends is next to both water and cats. The direct matches and all exclusions now account for every category exactly once. The German owns the fish.
